Electronic Testing for Leak Detection

Thornton Consulting is an independent test house undertaking integrity testing of newly installed waterproofing systems.

Thornton Consulting was instrumental in the adoption of electronic leak detection of newly installed waterproofing membranes by the building industry in the 1980’s, when it was first used on the prestigious Broadgate project in the city of London.

Electronic Leak Detection, otherwise known as Electronic Integrity Testing of Waterproofing Membranes, is a non-destructive test used to determine the integrity of waterproofing systems as a whole which can locate any breaches therein.

At Thornton Consulting, we utilise two different test methods, depending on the roof construction and membrane type;

Wet Method – Low Voltage (Field vector mapping, Earth Leakage Test, Electrical Conductance Test)

Dry Method – High Voltage Test (Holiday Test)

The two systems both rely on the same principle to detect breaches in the waterproofing membrane, in that the deck is electrically conductive and the waterproofing is an electrical insulator.

Our Electronic Leak Detection service of waterproofing membranes is widely used or recommended by Roofing Companies, Main Contractors and Material Manufacturers who need the assurance that their waterproofing is free from breaches before completion of a project. For that reason, we have built up numerous, long standing working relationships with contractors in the sector over the past three decades, who have come to rely on our high levels of attention to detail and customer focused ethic.

In some circumstances, however, electronic testing is not possible. For example, EPDM membranes are electrically conductive, in which case Thornton Consulting may be able to offer our Differential Pressure Test, whereby air is drawn through surfactant over laps, thereby testing them for integrity.
